7Couples and experts discuss topics such as the image and portrayal of Black marriage and the Black family. Couples note their inspirations for marriage growing up. Shows like the Cosby Show, which portrayed a success family unit. They express their concern for the lack of these positive shows today.
“The Huxtables was the first time I saw a positive Black couple depicted on tv,” says one of the wives. “I related so much to that show because it was refreshing to see this (Black) family that loved each other. I was so proud of that image.”
“If you look at the numbers, Black people have the lowest marriage rate in the country,” says Nisa Muhammad. “By those numbers you might assume that Black people aren’t interested in marriage. But if you go beyond the numbers you’ll find hurt and the hope that many of us have for a married union.”
“Black people want to get married just like everyone else… Marriage does matter (to us),” she adds.
